By John O’Sullivan, BBC News, Perth, Western AustraliaA white man has been arrested in relation to the arson attack on a goldfields property in the southern town of Goldfields in Western Australia.
The Goldfields Local Area Emergency Management Authority (LGEMA) said the man was charged with arson and mischief, and was being questioned by police.
“The investigation is ongoing and we ask the community to exercise caution when dealing with individuals who are threatening or causing harm,” LGEMA said in a statement.”LGEMA takes every measure to minimise the risk to the public and the environment.”
Police were called to the property on Friday night.
The blaze happened about 8:30pm (local time) on the property owned by Goldfields businessman, Tom Sowers.
It is not clear how the fire started or who was responsible.
Police said they would be conducting a forensic investigation and would not release the man’s name.
“Police will continue to provide information as it becomes available,” LGMA said.
“If you have information that may assist police in their investigations, you are asked to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.”
Mr Sowers said he was unaware of the arson and did not know what caused the fire.
“I don’t know what happened,” he said.
The property has been put up for sale, and police said the property was not likely to be damaged in the event of a fire.
The town of 1,500 people is home to the town of Greenstone, a mining town.
